Periodontics

Gum health is more important than many people know. Recent studies have linked gum disease to the risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Gum disease most commonly leads to tooth and bone loss if left untreated.

During every dental exam, our hygienists measure the gum tissue around each tooth to assess any periodontal deterioration. Digital x-rays are also taken to reveal any bone loss. The good news is that periodontal disease is treatable and can even be reversed.

Through continuous advanced education and the newest and latest technologies, our hygienists treat this disease with passion and obtain outstanding results. Treatments include using high-tech soft tissue lasers, ultrasonic scalers, antibiotics and a treatment plan coordinated by the hygienist. Our results with periodontal disease speak for themselves. It’s biologically amazing.

Periodontal disease is the most common cause of adult tooth loss and a real threat to our patients. Dr. Thiessen implements advancements in periodontal therapy to make gum treatment comfortable. With our experience in periodontal treatment, we seldom have to refer out to other specialists.

We can take care of unhealthy gums right here at Healthy Smiles Dental. Our superb team will work with you to provide effective treatment.

We may recommend surgical or non-surgical gum disease treatment depending on your needs.

Scaling and root planing: This is a non-surgical procedure that involves removing plaque and calculus from the mouth. Removing these substances promotes reattachment of healthy gum tissue.

Flap surgery: Flap surgery removes tartar deposits in deep pockets of the gums. We then make sure the gums are lifted back, cleaned, and sutured back into place.

Bone and tissue grafts: In a grafting procedure, natural or synthetic bone or tissue is placed in the area of bone or tissue loss.
